WHAT TO SEW IN 2027?

Trends, colors, fabrics and creative ideas for a year full of sewing

Every new year brings its share of trends, colors and fresh inspiration. But when you love sewing, there is no need to wait until all the 2027 Fashion Week are over before starting to imagine your next wardrobe.

The Fashion Week in New York, London, Milan and Paris give us direction, but they do not decide what we should wear.

At Maraval Couture, I have already started imagining what I would like to sew in 2027: clothes, of course, but also accessories, projects for the home, and creations made from fabrics and materials I already own.

This article will therefore evolve with us. The Fashion Week are not all over yet as I write this. We will be able to come back and enrich it as new collections are revealed.

And ultimately, that is also what sewing is about: starting with an idea and allowing it to evolve.

The major sewing trends for 2027: taking inspiration without copying

We are not going to turn this article into a Fashion Week report.

What interests me more is looking at the new silhouettes, shapes, fabrics and color combinations and asking myself:

What can we realistically sew and wear in 2027?

Among the first sources of inspiration, several pieces are already making me especially eager to start creating:

wide-leg trousers, fitted at the waist and looser through the leg; reimagined jackets and tailored suits; flowing or draped dresses; long skirts; waistcoats; coordinated sets; and above all, garments that can be worn and styled in different ways.

At the atelier, we have already started sketching our own ideas for the Maraval Couture 2027 collection, particularly around wide-leg trousers and jackets.

The colors I want to sew in 2027

A color maybe on trend, but above all, it should make us want to wear it.

For our first Maraval Couture 2027 inspirations, I chose a fairly broad palette: deep blues and cobalt, brown, ecru and natural tones, green, pink, purple, red, orange and butter yellow.

What I particularly love is combining colors

.

Why not try:blue and brown, green and pink, butter yellow and cobalt, red and purple, orange and blue, or simply brown and ecru for a much more natural look?

And when we sew our own clothes, nothing says we have to follow the fashion world’s official color palette exactly.

A color we have loved for ten years can easily become our 2027 color.

The fabrics I want to work with

There are so many beautiful fabrics to choose from, but personally, I always come back to three of them:

Linen, wool and cotton.

These are fabrics I love working with, and they can be used in far more ways than we often imagine.

Linen, not just for summer

Linen is often associated with holidays and summer clothing.

Yet depending on its weight, weave, cut and the way a garment is constructed, linen can take us well beyond the summer season.

With the linens I currently have at the atelier, we have already imagined several pieces: wide-leg trousers, a cropped jacket, a tailored waistcoat, a long dress, a wrap dress, a skirt and an overshirt .

Some of these pieces can be worn on their own in warm weather, then layered with a shirt, knitwear or a jacket when temperatures start to drop.

Wool

For me, wool remains essential when temperatures start to drop.

Jackets, trousers, suits, skirts, coats…

And once again, everything depends on the type of wool you choose.

A lightweight wool will obviously not be used in the same way as a heavier wool fabric intended for a coat.

Cotton

Cotton can be found throughout almost the entire wardrobe, and its uses go far beyond clothing.

Shirts, dresses, skirts, lightweight trousers, linings depending on the fabric, accessories, bags, cushions, home decor…

It is a fabric that offers an incredible amount of creative freedom.

Maraval Couture 2027 Projects

While preparing this article, I did not only want to look at what the major fashion houses were creating.

I wanted to create too.

So we started imagining our own designs using the fabrics and materials already available in my atelier.

First, there is a whole series based around linen, in different colors.

I also have French fabrics, particularly from the Panissières and Montchal area, which inspired us to imagine more structured trousers and jackets.

These are not my linens: they are two separate projects.

The goal is also to make greater use of what I already have in the atelier before automatically buying new fabrics and materials.

What if we made our own bag?

When we talk about sewing, we often focus on clothing.

But why stop there?

We can spend a lot of money on a designer bag, so why not invest that time instead in making a bag designed exactly for our own needs?

Personally, I would love to make myself a lightweight backpack, large enough to carry my belongings, practical and sturdy, without already being heavy before I even put anything inside it.

I could choose the number of pockets myself, where to place them, the straps, the fastening and the dimensions.

And above all: personalize it.

A small embroidery, initials, a floral motif, or a detail made from a fabric scrap…

It would truly be my bag.

The same idea can be applied to a tote bag, a pouch, a travel case, a laptop bag or a small everyday handbag.

Sewing for the home too

This is something I especially want to develop in 2027.

I really love the atmosphere of small American homes, with their dressed windows, little curtains, cushions, textiles and all those details that make a home feel warm and welcoming.

And so many of these things can be sewn.

Curtains, of course, but also small sheer curtains, fabric blinds, valances, cushions, covers, tablecloths, table runners, fabric baskets, storage covers and small decorative pieces.

We can also play with the seasons.

Light, bright textiles in spring, linen and cotton in summer, then warmer fabrics and deeper colors in autumn and winter.

And once again, there is no need to buy everything new.

Let’s not throw away our fabric scraps

This is something I have started developing more since 2025–2026.

A fabric scrap is not necessarily a useless piece of material.

When several fabrics are combined, they can become a completely new textile.

That is exactly the idea behind the patchwork dress project we are going to create at the atelier: working with different fabric pieces and different laces, gradually building our own textile, and then turning it into a garment.

But it can also be much simpler

A fabric scrap can become a pocket, a cuff, a belt, a small appliqué embroidery detail, part of a bag, a cushion or a decorative accent.

Sometimes, working within a limitation can even spark an idea we might never have thought of with a brand-new roll of fabric.

One year, four seasons: what can we sew?

🌱 Spring

Spring is the perfect time to bring back lightweight jackets, wide-leg trousers, shirts, dresses, skirts, waistcoats and overshirts. We start choosing lighter fabrics without necessarily giving up sleeves or layering.

☀️ Summer

This is, of course, the perfect season to bring out linen and cotton again.

Flowing dresses, loose trousers, skirts, shorts, shirts, tops, lightweight matching sets…

But summer can also be a good time to start preparing the clothes we will wear in the Back to work

🍂 Autumn

This is probably one of the most interesting seasons for sewing.

We can continue wearing some of our summer pieces in different ways.

  • A dress with a jacket.

  • Linen trousers with knitwear.

  • A shirt under a waistcoat.

  • A skirt with boots and a structured jacket.

Browns, deep blues, reds, greens and natural tones take on a whole new dimension at this time of year.

❄️ Winter

It is time for wool fabrics, lined jackets, warm trousers, coats, skirts and plenty of layering.

But even in winter, I do not like the idea of automatically putting the rest of the wardrobe away.

A cotton shirt is still useful. A waistcoat can be layered. Some linen pieces can also continue to be worn depending on their weight and how they are styled.

So the goal is not necessarily to sew a huge amount.

It is also about sewing thoughtfully and creating clothes we genuinely want to wear.

And my dressmaker’s advice for 2027?

Look at the trends. Look at Fashion Week. Look at the colors.

Then close it all.

And simply ask yourself:

“What do I want to create?”

You do not have to sew the trousers everyone is wearing or use the color announced as the color of the year.

You can take an idea, change it, choose a different fabric, move a pocket, combine two textiles, embroider a detail, or even invent something no one is talking about yet.

For me, the true signature of a garment is what we make for ourselves: the fabric we choose, the design we imagine, and the way we bring it to life.

That is exactly what sewing allows us to do:

Not just follow fashion, but create our own.
