After more than 30 years spent designing wedding dresses and bespoke garments, I wanted to share with you another aspect of my craft fabrics.
When I meet brides-to-be or clients at the workshop, I often notice they have the same questions :
What is the difference between cotton and viscose ?
Is satin a material or a fabric ?
Why does a dress drape differently depending on the fabric chosen ?
Hox can you tell if a fabric is good quality ?
All these questions inspired me to set up The Materials Workshop – Maraval Couture's Textile Guide.
Through this series of articles, I'd like to take you on a journey into the world of textiles to help you understand them better, choose them more effectively and discover the secrets of the materials that make up our clothes.
In particular, you will discover :
Natural, man-made and synthetic fibres.
The differences between a fibre, a yarn, a material and a fabric.
The most suitable fabrics for different seasons and types of clothing.
My design tips, drawn from over 30 years' experience.
Best practice for looking after your textiles.
Answers to the questions I'm most often asked at the workshop.
My aim is to make the world of textiles simple, accessible and exciting, even if you've never sewn a thing in your life.
I hope this guide will support you in your projects, help you make the right choices and enable you to look at fabrics in a whole new light.
